Thomas Aikins has been interested in art ever since he drew his first pencil drawing of a dog at the age of five. Now, when asked what he does, he answers with "artist" more than half the time. He has been painting since around 1992. He has been fortunate to be able to study with artists such as Carolyn Anderson, Ken Auster, John Budicin, Scott Christensen, Kim English, Michael Lynch, Kevin Macpherson, Matt Smith, George Strickland, and Skip Whitcomb. He is extremely fortunate to be able to take some of his instruction in France, Great Britain, and Italy. He has taken classes from Diane Turner, a well-known Utah artist, and considers her his mentor.
Thomas Aikins was born and raised in Provo, Utah. He received a B.S. degree in Psychology from St. Mary's College of California in Moraga, CA. He received both his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Counseling/Clinical Psychology from the University of Utah. He worked as a Staff Psychologist at the Salt Lake City Veterans Affairs Medical Center since September 1973. He works solely with outpatient veterans, many with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Depression, Anxiety Disorders, and Chronic Pain.
